Welcome
I am Giuseppe Formato, a Boston-based scholar of language, diaspora, and cultural memory. My work examines how language, identity, and power intersect across classrooms, immigrant communities, and urban landscapes, with particular attention to Italian and Portuguese in North America and the Azorean diaspora, especially from the Island of Santa Maria.

Drawing from applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, and critical pedagogy, my research explores heritage language learning, linguistic variety and motivation, queer and eco-justice pedagogies, and the resilience of immigrant communities amid processes such as gentrification. Across these contexts, I investigate how ideologies of language shape belonging, exclusion, and self-understanding.

An award-winning educator and researcher, I teach across secondary and higher education settings while maintaining active international collaborations. I am also engaged in translation, public scholarship, and poetry that reflect on migration, memory, and transatlantic identity.

On this website, you will find information about my publications, research projects, and ongoing collaborations. I welcome connections from scholars, students, and community partners.

Thank you for visiting.
