Dr. Giuseppe Formato recently completed a month-long research residency at the National Library of Portugal (Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal) in Lisbon as a recipient of a 2026 FLAD–BNP Short-Term Research Grant. His project, Visualizing Azorean Emigration: Santa Maria, New England, and Diasporic Memory, examines historical representations of Azorean migration and the connections between the islands and Portuguese communities in New England. Drawing on archival materials held at the National Library, Dr. Formato’s research contributes to his broader work on migration, memory, identity, and the Azorean diaspora and will inform forthcoming scholarly publications and presentations.
Dr. Giuseppe Formato presented his English translation of Arsénio Chaves Puim’s landmark work on the language and cultural traditions of Santa Maria, Echoes of Azorean Life: A Cultural and Linguistic Portrait of the Island of Santa Maria, at an official book launch held on August 9 at the Municipal Library of Vila do Porto, Santa Maria, Azores. The volume makes Puim’s important documentation of the island’s language, traditions, and everyday life accessible to an English-speaking and diasporic readership for the first time.
The well-attended presentation brought together the author, translator, scholars, local officials, and members of the community to celebrate Santa Maria’s cultural heritage and its preservation for future generations.

New Publication: Echoes of Azorean Life: A Linguistic and Cultural Portrait of the Island of Santa Maria
Dr. Giuseppe Formato‘s English translation of Echoes of Azorean Life: A Linguistic and Cultural Portrait of the Island of Santa Maria by Arsénio Chaves Puim has been published by Letras Lavadas as part of the prestigious Coleção Insulana. The volume features a foreword by Onésimo T. Almeida and includes Dr. Formato’s annotations, translator’s note, and concluding reflections. By making this important work accessible to an English-speaking audience, the translation preserves and promotes the distinctive linguistic and cultural heritage of the island of Santa Maria while contributing to scholarship in sociolinguistics, dialectology, Azorean studies, and Island Studies.

On July 21, 2026, Dr. Giuseppe Formato served as facilitator for the presentation of Tu non darmi retta, the latest poetry collection by Italian poet Mario Severino, at Villa Fernandes in Naples, Italy. Dr. Formato also wrote the introduction to the volume, which explores themes of identity, vulnerability, and the human experience.
The event brought together readers, writers, and members of the local literary community for an evening celebrating contemporary Italian poetry and literary dialogue.

On May 15, 2026, I presented collaborative research co-authored with Graça Índias Cordeiro at the conference Voices and Visions: Lusophone Communities in the Global Landscape, organized by the International Lusophone Studies Association and hosted at University of British Columbia.
Our paper, “Urban Displacements: The Azorean Diaspora and the Rebranding of Portuguese Identity in Boston,” examines the shifting representation of Azorean identity in Portuguese American public culture over time. Focusing on a large-scale 1932 celebration organized by the Portuguese American Civic League in Inman Square, which drew over 75,000 participants and prominently featured Azorean culture, the study contrasts this moment with a 2014 youth conference that revealed a striking shift toward mainland-centered, nationalized, and often nostalgic representations of “Portuguese” identity. Drawing on ethnographic fieldnotes, photographs, media sources, and institutional materials, the research traces how community-based, Azorean-rooted expressions have increasingly been replaced by centralized, depoliticized, and tourism-oriented spectacles, particularly following the relocation of celebrations to Boston City Hall Plaza in 2018. By analyzing parades, folklore, and performative nationalism, the project highlights the tensions between local memory, diaspora identity, and the commodification of Portugueseness, showing how grassroots forms of belonging are reshaped by broader ideological and institutional forces.
In April 2026, our collaborative research was presented by Graça Índias Cordeiro at the ASPHS 2026 Annual Conference, held in Toronto. Our paper, “Between Tremont Street and the Island of Santa Maria: Belonging and Identity in the Azorean Diaspora of Cambridge and Somerville, MA,” explores the lived experiences of Azorean immigrants and their descendants through a multidisciplinary lens that brings together ethnography, history, and sociolinguistics. Centered on the Monteiro family, who emigrated from Santa Maria in the early 1960s during the Estado Novo, the study traces more than fifty years of life along Tremont Street, straddling the border between Cambridge and Somerville.

The research highlights how identity and belonging are negotiated across two interconnected geographies: the enduring memory and heritage of Santa Maria, and the everyday realities of community life in the United States. Rather than centering displacement or urban change, the project foregrounds the roles of place, kinship, and memory in shaping a sense of home that is both transnational and deeply local. Methodologically, the work unfolds as a dialogic collaboration enriched by community voices and material artifacts such as photographs, diaries, clothing, recipes, and domestic objects, illuminating how identity is lived and sustained across generations.
